Summary: Beloved by children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon. Few people know his creator, Kevin Clash, who dreamed of working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. Displaying his creativity and talent at a young age, Kevin ultimately found a home on Sesame Street. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, this documentary includes rare archival footage, interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson Workshop.
One of my most anticipated films of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival was a documentary titled Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, the inspirational tale of Kevin Clash, the man who plays the Sesame Street character Elmo.
Growing up in Baltimore watching Captain Kangaroo and Sesame Street, Kevin dreamed of becoming a puppeteer and started creating his own puppets and performing shows for local kids. Its the story of a kid who dreamed big, worked hard at his craft, got a Willy Wonka-like invite into the Muppet Studios from Jim Henson himself, and went on to create one of the most famous characters in The Muppets universe.
Being Elmo might be a by-the-numbers biopic, but the journey is very enjoyable — especially for anyone who grew up watching The Muppets or Sesame Street. The film parallels the rise of Jim Henson and The Muppet movies, and gives us a behind the scenes peek into that world as it was being created. I’m a huge Muppet fanatic, and this film does not disappoint. We get to see outtakes, behind the scenes footage, and interviews with the other puppeteering greats like Frank Oz and Caroll Spinney.
There are sequences in this film which show just how much artistry goes into creating and operating a puppet character. Like the Disney animation documentary Frank and Ollie, this movie will give you a much bigger respect for these performers.
While it isn’t mentioned in the film, Clash also played Splinter in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies, Baby Sinclair on the Henson-produced television show Dinosaurs, and various other Muppet characters on television and movies. Clash is also now directing episodes of Sesame Street and spin-off specials.
After watching the first several minutes of Constance Marks’ documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, I realized I could watch an entire movie of just Elmo giving people hugs. But the heartwarming story of Elmo’s puppeteer Kevin Clash is also good. The movie doesn’t have much in the way of conflict, but it provides a great narrative of a man who pursued his life-long dream as well as a fascinating look inside the world of puppetry. While younger viewers may be a bit disappointed that Elmo isn’t the dominate figure in the movie, all audiences will be won over by Clash and how he made his dream come true.

Everyone knows and loves the popular Seasme Street character Elmo, but few are aware of his puppeteer, Kevin Clash. The documentary tells how Clash grew from humble origins in Baltimore and loved the escapism that shows like Captain Kangaroo and Sesame Street provided. He was so taken by puppets that he decided to turn his father’s fur coat into one. To his parents’ eternal credit, they only scolded him for not asking permission first. The movie then follows Clash’s career doing puppet shows for local kids, his introduction and tutoring under Jim Henson’s chief muppet engineer, landing jobs on two kids TV shows, working on Henson’s Labyrinth, and finally taking over the role of Elmo.
Stories tend to run on conflict, but they don’t always have to. Being Elmo wouldn’t be any more rewarding if it turned out that Clash had beaten drug addiction or had some other demon in his past. Clash’s tale appeals to our desire to see through-lines in an individual’s life. When post people are expected to have multiple careers over the course of their lifetime, it’s uplifting to see someone who knew what he wanted to do when he was a kid and found a way to do it. So many of us watched and loved Seasme Street but Clash never “grew out of it”. He found not only the world Sesame Street magical, but the show made him curious about the art of puppetry.
The film does a great job of showing that puppetry is much harder than it looks. Marks follows Clash to France where he’s teaching puppeteers how to handle the muppets. Things you would never think to consider five finger shoes , like “What’s the best way for Elmo to scratch his head” or “How should the mouth move when the muppet speaks,” turn out to be far more complex than previous thought. Audiences who see this film will leave with not only an appreciation of Clash but for the amount of work puppetry requires.
Being Elmo isn’t a complex movie. It’s not even a visually consistent movie as the interviews with Clash, which were done over a six year span, sometimes have him looking directly into the camera to answer a question and sometimes looking at the off-screen interviewer. But that doesn’t matter because it excels at what it sets out to do: tell a real-life inspirational story about the man behind one of the most beloved characters in the world. The result is the cinematic equivalent of a great big hug.

We all take cardboard boxes for granted. And why wouldn’t we? These unremarkable cuboid containers, often coloured pale beige have no intention of standing out from the crowd. Yet in spite of their seemingly characterless existence, cardboard boxes do crop up more often than one would expect in fiction, film and television. Most obviously, the humble cardboard box, or more accurately, a sizeable team of boxes were often cast as a crash mat on to which a character, usually a baddie falls. Many children’s TV programmes and films, most notably those produced by the UK’s Children’s Film Foundation gave these cardboard boxes centre stage as they actively thwarted the dastardly activities of many a bad guy. However outside of children’s film and television, these boxes were often out of shot, making us believe a character had in fact fallen to their death.
Another popular role for many boxes was to be mercilessly driven through in episodes of the A-Team, Starsky & Hutch and other action shows of the 1970′s and 1980′s. This was particularly humiliating as this casting trend happened at a time when their role in the stunt world was being superseded by the air-bag which replaced the box based crash mat. It’s a sad fact that cardboard boxes weren’t, and still aren’t permitted to become members of Equity. Their roles often went uncredited and even unpaid in many cases. For many, their acting career was short as they seldom finished filming unscathed. And with so many up and coming boxes ready to fill their shoes, the future is bleak for the majority of ‘used’ boxes.
Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, writer and creator of super sleuth Sherlock Holmes quickly realised the potential of the box and penned The Adventure of the Box, the second short story in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1892. Despite of having a major place in the stories title, the box featured little after the opening chapters of the story, as even the nation’s favourite super sleuth focused more on the contents of the box rather than the box itself. There is only one television adaptation of this story, being the final episode of ITV The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series which ran from 1985 to 1994. The box which sensitively portrayed the fictional box narrowly missed a BAFTA nomination in favour of Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Holmes himself.
Probably the most famous cardboard box featured on Jasper Carrot’s ‘Carrot’s Lib’ comedy show aired in the early 1980′s. Dave, The Cardboard Box featured in numerous sketches which depicted the day to day living of a plain brown box. This documentary, narrated by Rik Mayall (presumably David Attenborough had other engagements) showed the reality of life of an everyday box both at work and play. The show charted Dave’s unsuccessful foray into stand up comedy, his failed relationships and his eventual demise into alcoholism. Dave spent much of the 1980′s and 1990′s as a recluse and very little is known of his whereabouts today.
These days, the vast majority of boxes find employment in the packaging industry; a far cry from the dizzy heights of television and film stardom. It seems a shame that these unsung heroes seldom gain the recognition they truly deserve.

Suddenly and without explanation, Cornelius Rawlings, The Athlete (Tully, in one of the year�s most memorable performances) returns to his family�s Tennessee farm eighteen years after he disappeared. His parents have died, but his two brothers � Ezra, The Matriarch (Robert Longstreet ) and Amos, The Artist (Onur Tukel) � have continued their isolated, idiosyncratic lives on the family farm. The brothers receive the phenomenally bearded Cornelius� return with equal parts bewilderment and joy, but he remains a mysterious presence in their midst, slipping away occasionally to hustle cash as an unlikely ringer on the basketball and tennis courts.
Original story, starting with the lost brother who comes home after many years. Gradually, several other people appear, all of them adding to the mix of unusual characters. Funny things happen from the start, and continue through the end. Apart from the guy with the metal detector finding various interesting items around the house, also some proverbial skeletons come out of the closet.
Before this one I attended a screening in the Rotterdam filmfestival 2011, that puzzled me what it was all about. Luckily, this film resurrected me, and it gave me a wonderful hilarious 80 minutes. No more needs to be said. Only that I�m still wondering where the vicar (was he really one?) came from, and how he fits in the picture.
